I recently took a quick trip up to Longwood Gardens with the DC Flower Safari to photograph the dahlias. Our trip coincided with the Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society show in the Conservatory. Quite simply – I saw the most incredible dahlias I’ve ever seen in my life. Looking at my photos, I photographed at least 35 different varieties of dahlias – so I have the feeling that you’re going to be seeing a lot of dahlia photos here on my blog this fall.
The dahlias in the show were presented as cut flowers – most were a single blossom in a vase – lined up on tables – in a row of tables. This did make photographing the flowers a challenge – if I photographed the entire blossom, I usually ended up with strange parts of other flowers or people or tables in the background. So for most of the photos – I went in as close as I could with my macro lens to capture the beauty of the flower without all sorts of distracting elements in the photos.
This is the first set of dahlia photos from the Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society show at Longwood – I’ll be posting more photos in the weeks to come.
