Once again, Longwood Gardens put their famous blue poppies on display in March. I didn’t make it up there until almost the end of the display -so the flowers were a little past peak bloom when I saw them. But I did still find a few to photograph – and the light was very dramatic at times. So I had fun photographing the blue poppies – and got some different images than I’ve taken in the past.
Hope you enjoy my 2014 Blue Poppy photos 🙂

I recently visited Longwood Gardens with the DC Flower Safari Meetup Group and had a fantastic time – we had a chance to see and photograph the Blue Poppies!!!!

Blue poppies are native to the Himalayas. They are very difficult – if not impossible – to grow in warm climates. Research has shown that when exposed to temperatures warmer than 70 degrees – these cold-loving plants begin to die. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is one of the few places you can see them south of the Himalayas, Scotland or Alaska. Each year in March, the blue poppies are on display at Longwood.
This year, a few were already on display on March 4 – talking with the garden staff – they said more will be on exhibit later in the week. If you have a chance to visit Longwood Gardens in the next few weeks – I’d recommend visiting. The blue poppies are incredible.
Here are some of my photos of the beautiful flowers.

Not long ago, I received an email from Longwood Gardens letting me know that their Blue Poppies would be on display in the Conservatory starting on March 13. Last week, I drove up to see and photograph them. They were spectacular.
The blue poppies at Longwood are Meconopsis Lingholm. What distinguishes the Lingholm Poppies from other blue poppies is that they are fertile.
Here are a few of my photos of the Blue Poppies.

I’m not sure how long the Blue Poppies will be on display at Longwood Gardens. The Orchid show runs through the end of this month, so they may be there for the rest of the orchid show. If you’ve got time to head up to Longwood Gardens in the next week or so, it’s worth going just to see the blue poppies!
