In The Studio: Crystal White Calla Lilies

Well I finally did it – got a bunch of calla lilies and took them into the studio. For some reason I have an aversion to photographing calla lilies – probably because I’ve seen so many bad photos of them. They are an incredibly lovely popular flower – that can be very hard to photograph well.

Bill and I spent over an hour working with these wonderful Crystal White Calla Lilies in our studio – trying first one position for the flower and then another. We tried several combinations of lights and modifiers – and with all that – I’m still not sure I’ve gotten any photos that I’m really happy with.

Clearly I’m going to need to get some more calla lilies and try again. Fortunately for me Potomac Floral Wholesale usually has lots of colors and sizes of callas in stock – so at least I know where to get more photo subjects 🙂

If there’s one of these photos you particularly like – I’d love to know which one and why – because I’m still sort of stumped by how to get a photo of a calla lily that I like 🙂

White Calla Lilies

White Calla Lilies

Calla lilies (zantedeschia aethiopira) are some of the world’s most popular flowers. Native to Southern Africa, they are members of the Araceae family (they aren’t really lilies!). Calla lilies are frequently used in both wedding bouquets and funeral arrangements. At weddings they symbolize purity. At funerals, it symbolized rebirth and resurrection. Often associated with Easter, calla lilies have become a symbol for Irish nationalism since the 1916 Easter uprising.

I’ve photographed some lovely white calla lilies over the years – I hope you enjoy these photos of a few of them

Colorful Calla Lilies

Colorful Calla Lilies

When people think of calla lilies (zantedeschia) – they usually are thinking of a white flower. But every now and then, I’ve found some calla lilies in other colors to photograph. And when I find something other than a white calla lily – I just wish I could find more colorful varieties to photograph.

Here are some Flame Calla Lilies I photographed a few years ago.

Every now and then – I like the way one of my flower photos looks in black and white – here’s the exact same photo done as a black and white instead of color.

Golden Chalice Calla Lilies

One of the flowers I’m always looking to photograph are calla lilies. Not only do I get lots of requests for photos of them, but I think they are fascinating flowers. So I was thrilled to find a bed of Golden Chalice Calla Lilies on a recent visit to Longwood Gardens. Their calla lilies were the first one’s I’d seen that weren’t the more common white variety.

Calla Lilies belong to the Genus  Zantedeschia and the Araceae Family.

Here are a few of my photos of the Golden Chalice Calla Lilies.
