When I tell people that Bill and I love teaching a landscape photography workshop at Chincoteague National Refuge and Assateague National Seashore in the winter, they often look at me as if I’ve lost my mind.
Their immediate reaction is Chincoteague? Isn’t that a beach town? Why would you go in the winter? What about the weather? What if it’s freezing cold that weekend?
Actually – the marshes and beaches at Chincoteague and Assateague are amazing in the winter.
Summer is peak tourist season at Chincoteague. In the winter there’s almost no one there and we often have the beach or the marshes to ourselves.
The days are shorter – so we have time to grab a bite to eat before sunrise and can photograph a beautiful sunset and still be at our favorite restaurants for a 7PM dinner. We usually photograph just a few feet from the cars, so if it’s cold we can just jump back in a warm up for a few minutes.
And did I mention the wildlife? Thousands of migrating birds visit of Chincoteague in the winter, there is always the chance we’ll see some of Chincoteague’s famous ponies – and best of all – NO BUGS – I’ve never gotten bitten by a mosquito or a horse fly at Chincoteague in the winter.
