North Carolina’s Outer Banks

I recently spent some time photographing on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Thought I’d share some of my photos from my trip.

I spent most of one morning at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. What impressed me the most was the presentation of information about the Freedmen’s Colony on the island between 1862 and 1867. Along the Freedom Trail (about 1 1/4 miles one way) are several interpretive signs with information about the settlement and the people who lived there. With each sign, is a silhouette symbolizing one of the stories being told. This is from the “Freedom to be Educated” part of the trail. The sign had a quote about the importance of education from London Ferebee, a formerly enslaved man. There was also information on the sign about the penalties under North Carolina law for enslaved people to teach other enslaved people, as well as a bit of info about schools that the formerly enslaved attended.

And then I did lots of photography along the shore . . .

Not sure what exactly this series is yet – but it’s probably more modern women than my Morisot inspired series. Still vintage outfits but more activity than the Morisot scenes. I’m sure at some point I’ll come up with a better description . . .
