Dutchman’s Breeches © 2021 Patty Hankins
Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) are a wonderful spring wildflower. They bloom here in the woods here n the DC area in March and April, at roughly the same time as the Spring Beauty blooms, and shortly before the Virginia Bluebells open up. They are easy to spot – just look for the soft frilly leaves with a stalk with white and yellow flowers sticking up. The flowers are pantaloon shaped, reminiscent of traditional Dutch men’s trousers – hence the name Dutchman’s Breeches. They are native to much of the Eastern United States, and the Pacific Northwest. So next spring, keep an eye out for Dutchman’s Breeches as you walk in the wood enjoying the spring wildflowers.
I photographed these Dutchman’s Breeches at Jenkins Arboretum and Gardens in Devon, Pennsylvania

Ok – so I’m giving up on trying to organize posts by subject – and will just do it by season at least for a while. There are lots of posts with just a few photos lined up – and at the rate I’m going – I may never get enough photos for an entire post dedicated to a specific topic.
So – here are some of the wonderful fall scenes I’ve photographed over the years

Happy Anniversary © 2021 Patty Hankins
In the Victorian language of flowers, one of the meanings for peonies is happy wedding anniversary. For this still life, I imagined a woman thinking back to her wedding day on her anniversary. She has a photograph of herself and her husband on their wedding day, a couple of the cards they were given from cherished friends and family members, and a bouquet of flowers similar to those she carried on her wedding day so many years before.
The flowers were grown by Plantmasters, a local flower farmer in Maryland.

Poppy Anemone © 2021 Patty Hankins
In recent months, I’ve been experimenting with photographing flowers as portraits with custom backgrounds designed to highlight what I see as the personality of the flowers. For this poppy anemone, I wanted to emphasize the soft purples in the petals and the greys in the seeds. To me, the flower just felt like a visit will a gentle friend, who no matter how long it’s been since we last talked, the conversation picks up right where it left off.
