I created this still life with other participants at a workshop with Karen Burns and Marie Otero. We started out with the sewing tools – added what looked like a handmade stuffed rabbit carrying a butterfly net. And then we added the butterflies, and some flowers. Rearranged things more than a few times, to finally create this adorable scene. This was one of the workshops that has inspired me to create still life photographs of my own.

Ok – so I’m giving up on trying to organize posts by type of flower – and will just do it by season at least for a while. There are lots of posts with just a few photos lined up – and at the rate I’m going – I may never get enough photos for an entire post dedicated to a specific type of flower.

So –  here are some of the photos I’ve taken in my studo

Over the years, I’ve spent several weeks photographing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the fall. On every visit, I kept hoping to capture a photograph of one of the hillsides covered with the bright colors of changing leaves, and maybe even a little fog somewhere in the photo. Finally, on one of my trips, I spotted this scene as I drove along the road. I pulled over, set up my tripod, set my camera up – and started photographing. And when I got back to my cabin and looked at the photos, I knew I had captured the scene I’ve been dreaming of.

I hope you enjoy seeing this beautiful fall moment as much as I enjoyed photographing it.

Pink Root (Spigelia marilandica), also known as Indian Pink and Woodland Pinkroot, is a late spring into early summer blooming wildflower here in the DC area. The distinctive red and yellow flowers stand out in the woods, or in a garden. Pink Root is native to much of the mid-Atlantic and southeastern United States And if you are hoping to see hummingbirds in the garden, be sure to check out where the Pink Root is growing – hummingbirds love it!

I photographed this Pink Root at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland
