I recently photographed a spectacular set of Staircase Group Lupines at a local botanical garden. I couldn’t believe the shades of pink and purple in the flowers when I saw then. I knew I had to photograph them. Thought I’d share the photos of them with you today

I recently submitted a project to Lenswork magazine’s Seeing in Sixes book project. It was not selected for publication. So I decided to share the photos with you today rather than just having the project sitting on my hard drive. The idea behind the Seeing in Sixes book is for photographers to create a series of six photographs that make up a project.
As I selected the photos for the project, I realized how often I was creating images that are more abstract than many of my previous photos. To me, these photographs are more about color, texture, and shape than about a specific type of flower. Since submitting the project to Lenswork, I’ve continued creating images in this series that I’m sure I’ll be sharing with you in the future.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy seeing my Unfolding Worlds: Revelations in Colors project.
” When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

I’ve recently added a new photo – Pink Sweet Peas – to the shop on my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.
When I saw these wonderful pink sweet peas at my local florist, I knew I had to bring them home to photograph in my studio. The petals were so delicate – like fluffy pink ruffles. I’ve tried to share the sense of delicate fluffiness I saw in the flowers in my photo.
Pink Sweet Peas is available as a matted print on my website.

I’m back from an amazing trip photographing in New York’s Hudson River Valley. It was my first trip to the area and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m already planning a trip back to the area for fall color in October.
Some of my favorite landscape painters are members of the Hudson River School of painters – so I’ve always wanted to see the places that inspired their paintings. I spent close to two weeks photographing the landscapes, visiting historic sites, hiking in state parks and eating at some wonderful diners. I thought I’d share some of my photos from the trip with you today.
One of my favorite places I visited on the trip was Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, NY. This is the home and estate of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church.

Wisteria & Azaleas © 2015 Patty Hankins
I’ve recently added a new photo – Wisteria and Azaleas – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.
When I think about springtime in the south, I picture landscapes filled with wisteria, azaleas, spanish moss and dogwoods in my mind. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to explore Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia – and see scenes even more wonderful than I’d envisioned. In this particular area of the cemetery I could see lush azalea bushes with wonderful pink blossoms. The wisteria vines wound through the azalea bushes with their clusters of purple flowers contrasting with the pink of the azaleas. The azaleas and wisteria were kept in check and off the graves by one of the wonderful wrought iron fences I kept seeing in Savannah. And in the background of the scene stood a live oak tree – covered with Spanish Moss. For me – this scene totally captures the beauty of spring in Savannah. I had a wonderful time visiting there this year – can’t wait to go back in the spring of 2016.

Texas Wildflowers in the Wind © 2015 Patty Hankins
I’ve recently added a new photo – Texas Wildflowers in the Wind – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.
Texas Wildflowers in the Wind is the second wildflower photograph from my 2014 trip to Texas that is available as a matted print. It features two of the wildflowers I saw every day during the trip – Texas Bluebonnets and Texas Paintbrush. As I drove through east Texas, the roadsides were filled with large patches of bluebonnets and paintbrush. I loved seeing the combination of the purple and orange flowers.
One afternoon, the wind was blowing wildly. I tried photographing this wonderful field of flowers – but just couldn’t get my typical sharply focused image where I stopped all the motion. And then I realized that what had caught my eye was not just the flowers – but also they way they were moving in the wind. So I adjusted the settings on my camera to get as long of a shutter speed as I could manage in the mid-afternoon sun, and starting taking photographs. Finally I captured this image – which showed what I saw in the field – the wonderful Texas Wildflowers dancing in the wind.
Texas Wildflowers in the Wind is available as a matted print on my website.
