On my recent trip to Longwood Gardens, I got a great dose of summer when I spotted several beds of Big Leaf Hydrangeas (hydrangea macrophylla regula) in the East Conservatory.
Unlike the hydrangeas that I photographed last summer which were large bushes, the big leaf hydrangeas at Longwood were small compact plants with blossoms very close to the ground. In the four beds of Big Leaf Hydrangeas, there was an incredible variety of blossom colors. Here are a few of the colors I saw.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief dose of summer. Remember only a few more months until hydrangeas will be blooming outdoors again!

In addition to the surprise lilies and the pineapple lilies I photographed on my August visit to Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Virginia, I found a few other flowers to photograph before the rain started.
I was surprised to see hydrangeas still in bloom since it was August and most of the ones in the Bethesda area were pretty much done blooming. The limelight hydrangeas were in full bloom, with blossoms in colors varying from white to a very pale green.

As I was getting ready to leave (it was starting to rain) I spotted a patch of Zowie Zinnias which are incredibly colorful and fun to photograph. A bee was going from one flower to the next exploring. I had to stop and take a few photos. 🙂

Green Spring Gardens is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week. There is no fee charged for visiting the gardens. I had no problems photographing with tripod at Green Spring Gardens.

Last summer, I photographed hydrangeas at both Brookside Gardens and the National Arboretum. I was amazed at how many colors of flowers were blooming on the same plant. This summer, I photographed a few more types of hydrangeas at Brookside Gardens and in a cemetery outside of Chestertown, MD. Here are some of my favorite photos I’ve taken of hydrangeas.

I noticed that some of my neighbors have hydrangeas with deep purple blossoms – perhaps next year I’ll be able to photograph them . . .
