Some of my favorite flowers to photograph in the spring are the siberian irises. Since I’ve started photographing flowers in my studio, I’m able to photograph siberian irises more often than just during their bloom time and I’m able to create photos that I can’t do at the local gardens. I thought I’d share some of my favorite photos of siberian irises that I’ve taken in my studio with you today.

If you’d like to know more about how I photograph flowers in my studio, I do teach a photographing flowers in the studio workshop a couple of times a year. The next time I’ll be teaching it is in January. I’ll be announcing the exact date soon. If you’re interested in taking the workshop, just drop me a note at patty@hankins.net and I’ll make sure you’re among the first to hear when registration opens

I’ve also brought back several of my older aster photos for a limited time – they are all brightly colored round flowers presented as square photographs. They’ve sort of become known as my round on square photos. Several people have created fun groupings of these photos by choosing their favorite summer flowers.
These returning favorites will be available until Octobe4 31. After that – they probably won’t be available again until next summer.

Song of Norway Iris © 2016 Patty Hankins
I’ve recently added a new photo – Song of Norway Iris – to the shop on my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.
I love bearded irises. When I first saw the Song of Norway Iris I thought it was one of most beautiful irises I’ve ever seen. There was something about the shade of purle, the bit of white and the way the sun was highlighting it that I loved. And then I realized there were wonderful yellow tulips behind it – which just added a nice complementary color to the scene.
Song of Norway Iris is available as a matted print on my website.

I love photographing irises. This spring I was lucky enough to spend a couple of days photographing irises at Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in New Jersey. There were literally hundreds of varieties of irises blooming when I visited. I photographed at least 60 different types of irises – so it’s going to take me several posts to share them with you.
Today I’ll be sharing the rest of my photos of irises in shades of pink & purple

I recently submitted a project to Lenswork magazine’s Seeing in Sixes book project. It was not selected for publication. So I decided to share the photos with you today rather than just having the project sitting on my hard drive. The idea behind the Seeing in Sixes book is for photographers to create a series of six photographs that make up a project.
As I selected the photos for the project, I realized how often I was creating images that are more abstract than many of my previous photos. To me, these photographs are more about color, texture, and shape than about a specific type of flower. Since submitting the project to Lenswork, I’ve continued creating images in this series that I’m sure I’ll be sharing with you in the future.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy seeing my Unfolding Worlds: Revelations in Colors project.
