The same day I photographed the Yulan Magnolias at the National Arboreatum, I also photographed the blossoms on two Star Magnolia trees.

Earlier this spring I had the chance to photograph some of the Yulan Magnolias at the National Arboretum in Washington, DC. The Yulan Magnolias are an early blooming magnolia with white blossoms.

I recently made a quick trip to Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Virginia to see what was in bloom – and saw that one of their wonderful saucer magnolia trees was still blooming. And when I got home, I took a lot at my to-be-weeded pile of photos – and found a few more magnolia photos. So here thy are – some magnificent magnolia blossoms to brighten your day.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Saucer Magnolias – to my Beautifulflowerpictures.com website.
I photographed this wonderful saucer magnolia on a beautiful morning last spring. I loved how the the large pink and white blossoms complemented the clear blue sky. Every time I look at my photos of the saucer magnolia tree from that morning – I remember the soft breezes, the warm air – and just that wonderful feeling of spring. I hope my photo of the saucer magnolia brings you some thoughts of spring as well.
This photograph is available as a 15 X 12″ or 26 X 20″ gallery-wrapped canvas. You can order Saucer Magnolias from my website.

One of the truly spectacular early blooming trees in the Washington DC area is the Yulan Magnolia tree at the National Arboretum. Located along the side of the road just before the Asia Garden, this tree blooms beautifully in mid-March every year.

Yulan Magnolias (magnolia denudata) are native to Central and Eastern China. They grow to 40 feet tall – with amazing white flowers that bloom in early spring. They prefer either full or partial sun and will grow in zones 6 – 10.

The Yulan Magnolias have been cultivated in China for at least 1500 years. They were recorded as being in Buddhist temple gardens in the 7th Century A.D. During the Tang Dynasty, they were planted in the Emperor’s Garden and were considered a sign of purity.

Once I see the Yulan Magnolias blooming around the 20th of March – I know that some of my other favorite spring flowers will be blooming soon 🙂
