I’ve recently added a new photo – Black Baron Hibiscus – to my Beautifulflowerpictures.com website.
The petals of a hibiscus plant are amazing. So often they show marvelous combinations of colors and textures. This Black Baron Hibiscus was lovely – but when I looked closely at the petals – I fell in love with it. The colors (yellow, red, and pink) and textures were incredible. I hope you enjoy the details of this beautiful flower as much as I do.
This photograph is available as a 12 X 18″ or 20 X 30″ gallery-wrapped canvas. You can order Black Baron Hibiscus from my website.

I recently spent some time photographing a Black Baron Hibiscus. It’s a beautiful hibiscus full of color including yellow, red, pink, orange, peach. But as I looked at it – and my first few photos – I thought surely I can take photos of this amazing flower that are more interesting than just a portrait of the flower. I started considering the details of the flowers – especially the stamen and where the petals overlapped. I ended with something very different than my usual hibiscus photos. Hope you enjoy them.

Sunny Wind Hibiscus © 2011 Patty Hankins
I’ve recently added a new photo – Sunny Wind Hibiscus – to my Beautifulflowerpictures.com website.
I love hibiscuses. They are one of my favorite flowers to photograph since they have a unique shape. With their large petals and stamens that stick straight out – hibiscuses have a three dimensional structure that few other flowers have. And this makes them great fun to photograph! I love trying to convey the sense of depth of the blossoms, while still preserving the fascinating details of the flowers. This Sunny Wind Hibiscus caught my eye as I was visiting a local garden. Between the bright yellow petals and stunning red center, I knew I had to photograph it!
This photograph is available as either a 10X10″ or 20X20″ gallery-wrapped canvas. You can order Sunny Wind Hibiscus from my website.

I realized the other day that I hadn’t been to Brookside Gardens in several weeks. Brookside Gardens is a public garden in Wheaton, Maryland – located in Wheaton Regional Park. It’s only a few miles from home and one of my favorite gardens to photograph in. No matter what time of the year I visit – I always find something to photograph. Here are some fruit and flowers I photographed yesterday morning.

Even a brief visit to Brookside Gardens in the summer gets my day off to a fantastic start. If you’re in the DC area – be sure to check out what’s blooming at Brookside – there’s always something wonderful.

Bill and I headed into Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens yesterday morning. I’d heard that the lotuses (Nelumbo nucifera) were blooming early this year – and I needed to test out one of my cameras that had been out for repairs. The gardens are located in Washington, DC and are part of the National Capital Parks – East, a collection of parks, parkways and sites in DC and Maryland.
The lotuses were absolutely spectacular this year. Here are some of my favorite photos from yesterday’s visit to the Aquatic Gardens.
As usual, there were plenty of bees at the gardens – I was really pleased to capture this pair in my photo. They had been flying in and out of the blossom for a few minutes when I took the photo.

Along the edge of one of the ponds, I found a member of the mallow family. I love the bright bold colors of the flower. I haven’t been able to identify what variety of mallow or hibiscus this is. Does anyone recognize it?

And finally a pink water lily

I try to visit Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens at least once a summer. The flowers are always wonderful and every time I visit, I find something wonderful to photograph. I’m hoping to visit the gardens at least once more this summer.

Caleb Hibiscus (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
I’ve just added a new photo – Caleb Hibiscus – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website. I’ve always loved the bright colors and shape of hibiscus flowers. When I saw the bright orange Caleb Hibiscus – I knew I had to photograph it – and if I could get the colors to print accurately – that it would be wonderful on canvas. The combination of the red center – with the pink around it – leading out to the bright orange on the petals was an incredible splash of color against the green leaves.
This photograph is available as a 12 X 18″ and 20X30″ gallery-wrapped canvases. You can order Caleb Hibiscus from my website and I will have it available at shows this year.
