A Few Members of the Poppy Family

A Few Members of the Poppy Family

As I’ve been editing some of my photos, I found several photos of flowers in the Papaveraceae (or Poppy) family that I wanted to share. The first several photos are flowers that are native to the Eastern United States. The final photo, Bleeding Hearts – Dicentra spectabilis – is native to Asia.

I’ve recently added a new photograph – After the Dance – to my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/after-the-dance/

In the Victorian Language of Flowers, bleeding hearts can symbolize I want to tell you how I feel. As I created this still life, I imaged a young woman home from a formal dance with her current beau. As she puts down her fan and takes off her jewelry, she is already wondering what she will see him again so she can tell him how much she loves him.

This photograph is available matted to 12 X 12″ and 16 X 16″

Spring Wildflowers – Dutchman’s Breeches, Squirrel Corn, and Bleeding Hearts

Spring Wildflowers – Dutchman’s Breeches, Squirrel Corn, and Bleeding Hearts

Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis) and Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra eximia) are three spring wildflowers I always look for in the woods. They are very delicate wildflowers – I’ve learned what their leaves look like – so I can spot them before the flowers bloom – and then come back when they are likely to be blooming.

A couple weeks ago, I spotted the largest patch of Bleeding Hearts leaves I’ve ever seen – there were still a few lingering blossoms so I’m sure that’s what they were. I’m already planning a trip for next spring in hopes of seeming them in bloom

Bleeding Hearts

Bleeding Hearts

Bleeding Hearts (Lamprocapnos spectabilis formerly classified as Dicentra spectabilis) are one of the flowers that just make me smile every time I see them at the local gardens. Native to Asia, these delicate heart-shaped flowers are some of the first perennials to bloom in the spring. In the DC area, the bleeding hearts bloom just as the tulips are finishing up their bloom. These are a few bleeding heart photos I took earlier this spring.
