As I created this still life, I imagined a woman pianist returning to her dressing room after a magnificent performance. After she lays her sheet music on the table, she places some of the flowers from her admires and her jewelry atop the music.

As I created this still life, I imagined a flower lover planning ahead for next summer’s garden. She has a few flowers from her cutting garden in front of her. Some books about garden design available to consult for ideas. And some notecards as she writes to a friend and fellow gardener about plans for her garden.

In the spring, summer and fall, I try to spend as much time as I can out photographing. Which means come winter, I spend more time in the studio and at the computer editing photos. I’ve added seven new photographs to my website in the past few weeks. Five are new flower photographs, and two are found still lifes from my trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park last fall.
The new flower photos will all be featured in my Beauty of Flowers show at Green Spring Gardens in just a few weeks. Here’s a first look at my new flower photos.

The last two photos were taken at Cades Cove Methodist Church in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They are scenes of objects left by others in the church, and I photographed them as I found them. So I consider them found still lifes, rather than still life scenes I arranged in my studio.

Despite the fact that families moved out of Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the mid-1900’s, when you walk into the Cades Cove Methodist Church today you can sense that the congregation just left the church after Sunday services. The church itself, and the graves in the graveyard, are tidy and well-maintained. The day I visited, there were flowers on the pulpit, a Bible on the lectern and hymnals on the piano. In this photograph, I tried to capture the peaceful feeling that a Sunday service has just ended, and the parishioners have left the church.
