Plum Sunflower – New Photo

When I saw this plum sunflower at the local market, I knew exactly how I wanted to photograph it. I wanted to share the details in the center and the wonderful combination of reds and yellows in the petals. This is one of the wonderful local flowers I photographed from Petal Patch Flower Farm.

One of the photos in my Inspired by Frida series. These photographs are inspired by the self-portraits painted by Frida Kahlo.
The model for this photograph is Kitty Dusty. For those who don’t know my cat Dusty, she’s definitely a little princess who has to be the center of attention. She loves it when the various models we work with come to the studio. She knows she’s going to get adored! So as I created the series, I knew that Kitty Dusty needed to be included in it. It just took a lot more work in Photoshop to get Dusty in the series than any of the other models.

On a very foggy visit to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Kentucky, I was fascinated by they layers of trees and leaves I was seeing. I tried to capture the sense of being surrounded by fog in the woods on that cool fall afternoon.

This photograph is printed using the late 19th-century photographing printing process known as Kallityping. The emulsion is hand-painted onto the paper, exposed with a negative under bright lights, and toned with palladium. Each print from a negative is slightly different – so these are one of a kind images.

On a cold January evening, I was photographing the sunset at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Chincoteague, Virginia. While the colors in the sky were lovely, what really caught my eye was the reflection of the colors in the water. And then I noticed the wonderful bare trees reflecting in the water along the distant shoreline. Suddenly, I knew how I wanted to photograph the sunset.
