I’ve recently added a new photo – Smoky Mountain Stream – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

One of my favorite things to photograph in the Smoky Mountains in the spring is the water rushing down the hillsides. In the summer, some of the streams are mere trickles of water – in the spring they are overflowing with water roaring over the rocks on the hillsides. I photographed this stream last spring on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I’d been out photographing when it started to rain. Fortunately it was just a drizzle so when I spotted the stream surrounded by the green trees with the water tumbling over the moss covered rocks I was able to stop and photograph it. Every time I return to favorite photo locations in the Smokies I always find something new to photograph there – I can’t wait to see how this stream looks next spring.

Smoky Mountain Stream is available as a matted print on my website.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Siberian Irises – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

I love Siberian Irises. Usually when I photograph them I’m trying to capture the beauty of a single flower. Last time I photographed some Siberian Irises in my studio – I tried something different. i gathered a bunch of blossoms and held them close together – with petals, stamens and sepals all overlapping. And then I started shooting various composition hoping to show just how wonderful these flowers are when they are in a bunch. I loved seeing the various shades of purple, the different textures in the petals and the occasional splash of yellow.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Chincoteague Sunset – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

In February I photographed one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever seen. Bill and I were teaching a landscape photography workshop in Chincoteague, Virginia. We spent most of Saturday afternoon photographing along Wildlife Loop. As the sun started to set, we headed to the boardwalk half-way around the drive and settled in. We’d spotted these trees earlier in the day and realized that if the sky lit up – they could provide an interesting silhouette for a photo. The sunset that night was amazing – full of oranges and yellows, pinks and purples – and to make even more special – a bald eagle settled into one of the trees and watched the sunset with us. If you look closely you can see the silhouette of the eagle in one of the trees in my photo.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Graveyard Angel – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

From watching movies and reading books many of us have an image of Southern cemeteries as places with ornate statues on graves, dogwoods, azaleas and lots of Spanish Moss. When I was photographing in Savannah earlier this year, to my surprise I found a few cemeteries that looked  just like I imagined they would. Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah is probably the quintessential Southern cemetery, particularly in the older sections. I found incredible graves with statutory angels and since I was there in the spring, they were surrounded by blooming azaleas and dogwoods, with Spanish Moss hanging from the surrounding trees. I had a wonderful time photographing at Bonaventure Cemetery and look forward to heading back there again to see what else I can find.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Iris Petals – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

I love Siberian Irises. Usually when I photograph them I’m trying to capture the beauty of a single flower – or perhaps a group of them. Recently, while photographing some Siberian Irises in my studio I suddenly saw the possibility of photographing just the petals and creating a more abstract photo. After trying several compositions, and multiple F-stops – this was my favorite photo of the petals of the Siberian Irises. I feel like the photos really brings out the variety of blues and purples in the petals – and the contrast of the bits of yellow in them. After photographing the petals – I took some photos of several of the blossoms pulled together – I’m still editing one of those – hope to have it available in the next month or so.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Live Oak Alley – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

One of the goals for my trip to Savannah, Georgia earlier this year was to photograph one of the amazing Live Oak Alleys the region is known for. Of the Live Oak Alleys I saw – my favorite was this one at Wormsloe Historic Site. The mile-long entrance road to the estate is covered by the arching branches of the live oak trees covered with Spanish Moss and resurrection ferns.  The morning I was there – the sky was overcast which helped add a sense of mystery to the site. I loved photographing this Live Oak Alley – and am looking forward to photographing another live oak alley outside of Charleston, South Carolina later this year.
