I’ve recently added a new photo – Marmorata Water Lily – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

Water lilies can be such delicate summer blooming flowers. I love seeing all the colors of water lilies are some of the local gardens. Not only do the petals come in all sorts of wonderful shades but the centers are often a complimentary color – like the pale purple and yellow combined in this wonderful Marmorata Water Lily.

When I photographed and edited the Marmorata Water Lily photo, I kept thinking about two other water lily photos I have – June Allison Water Lily and Panama Pacific Water Lily. The three photos are matted to the same size if you want to have an arrangement of three water lilies on display in your home. I’m always on the looking for other water lily photos that would complement these three – and when I find them, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Marmorata Water Lily is available as a matted print on my website.

I’ve recently added a new photo –  Fusion & Zodiac Gerbera Daisies II – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

Gerbera Daisies – what can I say – I love them with their big bold shapes and bright colors. For the longest time I was really challenged photographing gerbera daisies since they can be difficult to grow and keep looking good in gardens in the mid-Atlantic region. I took so many photos of gerbera daisies that I wasn’t happy with. Now that I’ve started photographing flowers in my studio, I’m able to create photos of gerbera daisies that I love.

This is another photograph taken with the same flowers I used for Fusion & Zodiac Gerbera Daisies, Fusion Gerbera Daisy and Zodiac Gerbera Daisy – only this time instead of photographing the whole flowers, I just photographed the petals. I had arranged the flowers in a vase and was photographing the group but wasn’t happy with what I was seeing. As I looked at the arrangement of the flowers I realized what I liked best in that moment was how the yellow and orange petals looked right alongside each other. So I moved my tripod in closer, put my macro lens on my camera – and photographed just most of one yellow flower and parts of two orange flowers. Not only was the contrast between the orange and yellow wonderful to see – but by placing the yellow petals right next to the center of the orange flowers – it really brought out the yellow in the center of those flowers.

This photograph is available as a matted print. You can order Fusion & Zodiac Gerbera Daisies II from my website.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Prickly Poppies in the Wind – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

This photo is the first photo I’ve ever offered for sale that is a composite photo. What you are looking at is actually a combination of ten photographs of the same set of wildflowers blowing in the wind.

Taken a couple of days after I photographed the Texas Wildflowers in the Wind – I photographed these wonderful white Prickly Poppies (argemone albiflora) along the side of the road on a windy day east of Austin, Texas. When I photographed them, I took a number of photos (somewhere around 30) with my tripod in exactly the same spot – hoping to stop the action of the moving flowers enough to capture a sharp image of these wonderful white wildflowers. When I looked at the photos on my computer – I wasn’t happy with any of them. Not a one of them was sharp in all the key spots – and captured the beauty of the flowers. So the images sat on my hard drive for several months.

Then last fall I took a workshop with George DeWolfe where he introduced us to a technique for stacking images to show motion in a photograph. As I watched the demo – and experimented with a few photos I took in a nearby field – I realized that this was the perfect technique for me to use on the prickly poppy photos. So when I got home I chose ten of the images of the white prickly poppies and stacked them into one file.

I was amazed at the results – I love how the final image looks. None of the flowers are in sharp focus – instead they seem to all be moving every which way – which is exactly what they were doing along the side of the road when I photographed them. I’d love to know what you think of my photo – and if you think it shows wildflowers dancing in the wind.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Yolaporte Chrysanthemums – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

My new Yolaport Chrysanthemums photo is actually a re-edit and re-crop of a photo I took a few years ago.  I’d photographed this group of spoon mums with an irregular space around them – and then couldn’t figure out how I wanted to share them. I didn’t think the photo would work as a square crop – since it’s a bunch of little round flowers rather than a single big flower (many of them round) in the center of the frame. But as I thought about the Yolaporte Spoon Chrysanthemums I realized it was the overlapping petals and repetition of the shape the I found interesting to photograph – not just a single Yolaporte Chrysanthemum. Once I’d figured out what I had caught my eye about the scene – I knew how to crop and edit it – so I could share it with you.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Zodiac Gerbera Daisy – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

My Zodiac Gerbera Daisy photo is a companion photo to my Fusion Gerbera Daisy photo. Both are close-up studio photographs of wonderful brightly colored gerbera daisies. I’ll be adding more photos in the series of Gerbera Daisies in the weeks and months to come. Until then, I hope you enjoy seeing my photograph of this wonderful bright yellow flower.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Tower of Jewels Echium – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

My new Tower of Jewels Echium photo is actually a re-edit and re-crop of a photo I took in 2009. When I first photographed the Tower of Jewels Echium I loved the combination of the red flowers and the long curly green leaves – but I just couldn’t find the photograph I wanted to present in the images I captured. For some reason, I went back to the photos this winter – and suddenly saw a square crop of the photo that I hadn’t seen before. The new crop emphasized the contrasts between not only the red and green, but also the contrast between the curves of the leaves and the white points of the flowers. This is one of those hidden gems of a photo in a photo that it just took me a while to find. 🙂
