Opening Night Rose – February 2010 Photo of the Month

Opening Night Rose (c) 2010 Patty Hankins

What could be more perfect for my February 2010 Photo of the Month than a single red rose? Since ancient times, roses have symbolized love and passion. The Greeks and Romans associated roses with Athena and Venus – their goddesses of love. Early Christians linked the five petals of early roses to the wounds of Christ, with the red rose eventually coming to symbolize the blood of martyrs. In more recent times, red roses have been used as a symbol of socialism or social democracy.

For many people, a red rose is the symbol of love associated with Valentine’s Day.

I photographed this wonderful Opening Night Rose at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland last summer. As the February 2010 Photo of the Month, it is available at a special price of 20% off the regular price.
