Orange Paintbrush – December 2010 Photo of the Month

Discovering the Orange Paintbrush wildflowers were one of the highlights of my summer trip to Colorado. I’d seen a scattered few Indian Paintbrush plants here in the east – but when I went west I saw them on much larger scale. Not only did I see Orange Paintbrushes, but also some pink and yellow ones. The Orange Paintbrushes grow much taller than the ones I’d seen previously, and in much larger groupings. One of the things I loved about seeing them was how often I would see hummingbirds hovering around the paintbrushes – and then buzzing in for a quick dip in the nectar. They were so much fun to watch – and once I knew to look for the hummingbirds I saw them regularly visiting the various Orange Paintbrushes. I photographed this set of Orange Paintbrushes in the Gunnison National Forest north of Crested Butte Colorado.

Yellow Lady’s Slipper – November 2010 Photo of the Month

A few years ago, I saw and photographed my first Pink Lady’s Slipper. Since then, I have been looking for a Yellow Lady’s Slipper to photograph. A native orchid, Lady’s Slippers are one of my favorite wildflowers (and they seem to be very popular with others as well). I’ve done a fair amount of hiking in the Smoky Mountains and along the Blue Ridge Parkway when the Yellow Lady’s Slippers should be in bloom – but I still haven’t found one in the wild. This one was photographed in a private garden in the Gatlinburg area. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph in the garden of a wonderful woman who saw my work and a show and invited me over to her house to photograph. I hope you enjoy my Yellow Lady’s Slipper photograph as much as I do.

Until November 30, 2010, SAVE 20% off the regular prices for Yellow Lady’s Slipper.  The photograph is available through my website in two sizes of gallery-wrapped canvases.

Colorado Blue Columbine – October 2010 Photo of the Month

Colorado Blue Columbine

One of my goals on my trip to Colorado this summer was to photograph the Colorado Blue Columbine, the Colorado State Flower. I photographed the Colorado Blue Columbine in several places – each time thinking WOW! These are wonderful. I’m not going to find any better than these. And then I got to Yankee Boy Basin in the San Juan Mountains. I was a little further south and at a higher altitude than I had been at previously. The Columbine at Yankee Boy Basin were the most the beautiful I saw during my entire trip. I really like the way this set of five blossoms clustered together – a beautiful composition created by Mother Nature for me to photograph. I hope you enjoy this Colorado Blue Columbine photograph as much as I do.
