On a recent trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania I spent some time photographing at the Central Market. Founded in 1730, Central Market is oldest continuously operated farmer’s market in the country! The market is currently housed in a Romanesque Revival style building constructed in 1889. Within the market, 65 vendors sell everything from meat to produce, flowers to baked goods, and everything in between. The market is open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. If you’re in Lancaster, it’s well worth taking time out to visit the market (and get something to eat).

As I looked at the display at the Sweet Shop, I loved how the basked on the counter stood out from the shelf of treats behind it. I could just imagine a couple of little kids telling their Mom which candies they wanted her to buy them at the market.

Chanticleer Garden

Chanticleer Garden

I’ve had a few questions about some of the lesser-known gardens we’ll be visiting during my Photographing the Gardens of Philadelphia workshop in May.  so I thought I’d share a bit about some of them here in my newsletter in the coming weeks.

Chanticleer Garden, located in Wayne, Pennsylvania, was described by Garden Design Magazine as “America’s most inspiring garden.” Located on the estate of the Rosengarten family, Chanticleer became a public garden after the death of Adolph Rosengarten Jr in 1990. With terrace gardens, cutting gardens, wooded gardens and more, there is always something to photograph in the 35 acres open to the public at Chanticleer.

In May, we’re likely to find peonies, irises, wildflowers and more in bloom. Here are a few of my photos from Chanticleer to give you an idea of what we might see.

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens

I’ve had a few questions about some of the lesser-known gardens we’ll be visiting during my Photographing the Gardens of Philadelphia workshop in May.  So I thought I’d share a bit about some of them here on my blog in the coming weeks.

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens in an amazing peaceful oasis in the heart of Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park   Occupying only 1.2 acres, the gardens include beautiful landscapes hillsides, a waterfall, a koi pond, a traditional Japanese house and a tea house and garden. The site has been the home to Japanese buildings and landscaping dating back to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. For many years, it was the home of a Japanese Buddhist Temple Gate brought to the United States for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition. The house was built in Japan in 1953 when is was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art in New York. After the exhibition in New York, the house was moved to its current location.

In the spring, the gardens are filled with blossoming azaleas and dogwood. With any luck, they will be in bloom when we visit during the workshop.

Here are a few of my photographs from Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens to give you a sense of what we might see and photograph there in May

I’ve recently added a new photograph – On the Puipit, Cades Cove Methodist Church, Great Smoky Mountains National Park – to my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/on-the-pulpit/

Despite the fact that families moved out of Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the mid-1900’s, when you walk into the Cades Cove Methodist Church today you can sense that the congregation just left the church after Sunday services. The church itself, and the graves in the graveyard, are tidy and well-maintained. The day I visited, there were flowers on the pulpit, a Bible on the lectern and hymnals on the piano. In this photograph, I tried to capture the peaceful feeling that a Sunday service has just ended, and the parishioners have left the church.

This photograph is available matted to 12 X 20 for $ 84.00 or 16 X 24 for $ 134.00

A Few Photos from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A Few Photos from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

I spent about a week photographing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the end of October/beginning of November. I missed peak color – I was probably a week early. I hit some not so wonderful weather. And yet I still had a fantastic time and took some photographs I’m really happy with. I’ve just barely started doing my serious editing of my photos and with everything that’s going on at the moment, I’m not sure when I’ll have time to edit them. So I thought I’d share a few of my quick edits of some of my photos with you today.

And for everyone who always asks did I see and photograph any bears while I was in the Smokies. I didn’t see any in the park this trip – but there was this cute little guy at the condo I rented.

I had a wonderful time in the Smokies and I’m already looking forward to my next trip. I’m hoping to get back there in the spring of both 2019 and 2020. I’m planning on leading a photography working in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee in late April 2020. It will probably be late next year before I open registration for the workshop, but if you know you’d like to be among the first to hear about the workshop, just drop me a note and I’ll be happy to put you on the first to hear about the Smokies workshop list.
