Earlier this year I spent a wonderful morning exploring Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Established in 1836, Laurel Hill Cemetery is the second oldest rural cemetery in the United States. The cemetery is full on wonderful statuary. The condition of many of the statues surprised me. They have significantly more wear and damage than statues in other cemeteries I’ve visited. I don’t know if it is the age of the statues, the type of stone or the harsher weather than caused the damage.
Here are a few of my photos from Laurel Hill Cemetery.

As I’ve been preparing for my Gardens of Philadelphia workshop I’ve been spending lots of time photographing in the Philadelphia area. Two of the places I’ve recently visited specialize in wildflowers – Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve near New Hope, PA and Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware. I thought I’d share a few of my photos from these two wonderful places with you today.

If you’re looking for a place to see spring wildflowers within a few hours drive of Washington, DC both of these locations are excellent choices. We’ll be visiting both of them during my Gardens of Philadelphia workshop next week. There is still space available if you’d like to join me for a week of photographing beautiful flowers. You can find all of the information about the workshop at http://beautifulflowerpictures.com/photographing-gardens-philadelphia/

Last week, I took a day off from getting for my show Tulipmania to visit the Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park. Shofuso has been listed as one of the top Japanese gardens in the United States. It was very peaceful the morning I visited, I’ll definitely head back there again when I’m in Philadelphia.
Shofuso House and Gardens has a fascinating history. The house was built in Japan in 1953 when is was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art in New York. After the exhibition in New York, the house was moved to it’s current location in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park. The site has been the home to Japanese buildings and landscaping dating back to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. For many years, it was the home of a Japanese Buddhist Temple Gate brought to the United States for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition. The gardens currently occupy 1.2 acres, complete with hills, a koi pond, the house and a tea house.
Here are a few of my photos from my visit to Shofuso House and Gardens
