Photos from the Road

I used to do a lot of traveling and photographing. For many places, I really don’t have enough photo to do separate blog posts – so thought I’d start combining photos from various places into a series of photos from the road. Hope you enjoy seeing the scenes from some of my travels.

Introducing Twelve New Photographs

Introducing Twelve New Photographs

Over the past few months, I’ve added twelve new photographs to my website. I wanted to share them with you today so you can see where my photographic adventures and explorations have taken me.

As you’ll see I’ve been exploring still life photographing in my studio since taking a still life photography workshop last spring. But don’t worry, I’m still photographing flowers – in fact – I’ll have two solo shows next year featuring my flower photos – so you’ll be seeing lots of new flower photographs in the months to come.

A Few Days at Chincoteague NWR

A Few Days at Chincoteague NWR

In late April, I spent a couple of days photographing at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. Chincoteague is my favorite NWR to visit and its a place I know pretty well. But as always, there is something different to photograph than on previous trips.

As usual, I photographed a sunrise in the marsh. This may be my favorite place to photograph sunrise, almost every time I visit, I end up with photos of a peaceful sunrise. During this sunrise, I saw some sika deer and birds in the early morning light in the marsh.

Once the sun came up I spent my time photographing wildlife! I found a herd of Chincoteague’s famous ponies grazing along the side of the road. A couple of them raised their heads while walking so I could photograph them. I can’t tell you how many photos I have of Chincoteague ponies with their heads down grazing!

As usual, there were lots (and lots) of birds to photograph. These are some of the Great Egrets I saw.

The big surprise for me was finding a pair of sika deer alongside one of the channels. I’d seen a few earlier in the marsh at sunrise but was too far away to get anything more than a tiny silhoutte in my photo. Along the channel, I was actually able to get photos where you can tell what the deer are!

And for me, no trip to Chincoteague is complete without stopping by Assateague Light. It was nice to see that the light has been painted recently.

If you are in the DC area, Chincoteague is always a great place to visit for a quick photo getaway. I’m not sure when I’ll next visit, but I do know I’ll have a wonderful time photographing when I do.

I’m excited to share another of my palladium-toned kallitypes with you

A small graveyard angel in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia

This photograph is printed using the late 19th-century photographing printing process known as Kallityping. The emulsion is hand-painted onto the paper, exposed with a negative under bright lights, and toned with palladium. Each print from a negative is slightly different – so these are one of a kind images.

The photographs are printed on 8 X 10″ Bergger 100% Cotton Cot 320 paper. They are matted to 11 X 14″ in a white acid-free mat.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Chincoteague Reflections  – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website

Late one February afternoon I was photographing a sunset at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. My original photos were typical landscapes, but as I watched the sun set, I found myself looking at the reflections of the colors in the clouds in the water. I ended up with an abstract photo of the beautiful pastel shades of pink, purple, and blue that I saw late that afternoon.
