Colorado Wildflowers – My August 2011 Photo of the Month

Colorado Wildflower Landscape

Last summer I spent a wonderful week in Colorado photographing wildflowers. One of the sights that absolutely amazed me was just how big and grand the landscapes were. I do most of my photography in the eastern United States – and we just don’t have mountain ranges like they do in Colordao! The mountains seemed to go on forever. The incredible blue skies with white puffy clouds touched the mountain tops in the far distance. I photographed this scene in the Gunnison National Forest. In many way it is the perfect representation of what I see in my mind when I think about Colorado wildflowers. Lots of silvery lupine in the foreground, some monument plants and arrowleaf balsamroot scattered throughout the meadow – trees in the distance – rocky mountain peaks with just a bit of snow on them – and topped by a big blue sky full of clouds. I can’t wait to head back to Colorado and spend more time exploring and photographing – maybe next summer.

Shooting stars are an incredibly delicate spring wildflowers. I photographed this set of shooting stars in Tennessee last spring – it was one of the first sets I’d found in good enough shape to photograph. I photographed some pink shooting stars last month at Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks – they are just as beautiful as the white ones.

Last summer I spent a wonderful week in Colorado photographing wildflowers. Not only did I have a wonderful hiking in some National Forests, I discovered all sorts of new to me wildflowers. Two of my favorites were the Colorado Blue Columbine and the Silvery Lupine. I love the colors, the shapes and the textures in both flowers. So you can imagine how excited I was to spot some of each growing close enough together to that I could have both flowers in one photograph. This photograph of the Colorado Blue Columbine and Silvery Lupine is one of my favorite photos from the trip.

Tour de France Iris – May 2011 Photo of the Month

Tour de France Iris (c) 2010 Patty Hankins

I photographed this incredible Tour de France Iris last spring. I just loved the combination of yellow, gold and white in the flower contrasting with the green leaves in the background. The iris was named after the Tour de France and the gold of the petals honors the yellow jersey worn by the leaders during the race.

For me, once the daffodils really start blooming, I know spring is here. I just love seeing all the various colors and shapes of daffodils that are planted in the Washington DC area. I spotted this set of Kindergarten Daffodils last year. I loved the way the light was streaming through the petals – so that the white petals and yellow & orange trumpets seemed to glow in the wonderful spring light.

Coral Reef Chrysanthemum – March 2011 Photo of the Month

Coral Reef Chrysanthemum

Last fall I photographed some Coral Reef Chrysanthemums – and absolutely fell in love with these wonderful flowers. Coral Reef Chrysanthemums are amazing to see – full of textures and colors. Like most spider mums, Coral Reef has many long narrow petals that curve at the end. In the center are shorter curlier petals. And then there are the colors of the Coral Reef Chrysanthemum – amazing shades of yellow, orange and red.

Chrysanthemums have been cultivated for centuries. It was used as an herb in China as early as the 15th century B.C. By the 8th century A.D, it had arrived in Japan where the emperor eventually adopted chrysanthemums as his official seal. In recent times, many wonderful types of chrysanthemums have been developed. The U.S. National Chrysanthemum Society has classified thirteen forms of chrysanthemums. Spider mums are probably my favorite form of chrysanthemums.

In additional to being an amazing decorative flower, some very practical uses of chrysanthemums have evolved. In Asia, chrysanthemums are used in making tea and as salad greens. Certain varieties can be used to created insecticides that are less toxic to mammals and birds than many synthetic pesticides. They have also been found to reduce indoor air pollution. Medicinally chrysanthemums are supposed to help treat everything from high blood pressure to bacterial infections.
