Western Blue Flax (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
Last summer while I was hiking in Colorado I kept seeing (and photographing) these wonderful bright blue wildflowers. My challenge was figuring out what they were – my initial identification was that they were some sort of geranium. Fortunately, one of my twitter friends was able to correctly identify the wildflowers as Western Blue Flax.
Western Blue Flax (Linum lewisii) is a wildflower native to much of the western U.S. and to most of Canada. A perennial member of the Linaceae (flax) family, it prefers to grow in sunny meadows and fields. Cooked seeds of western blue flax are edible – raw seeds should not be eaten as they contain cyanide. Recent scientific research has identified many potential health benefits and medicinal uses of flaxseed. Fibers from flax plants have been used to make everything from string to linen fabrics. The oil of some flax plants has been used as a light source and in paints and varnishes.
So now only are the flowers of the Western Blue Flax incredibly beautiful, but the plant is very useful as well.

Madame A. Meilland Rose (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
I’ve photographed several peace roses over the years – but recently I’ve been wanting to offer a new peace rose photograph since the ones I had were several years old. So you imagine how pleased I was to see this amazing Madame A. Meilland Hybrid Peace Rose in full bloom last September. I love the way the petals are opening up – with the soft pinks around the edges – with all the shades of yellow in the center. The morning dew adds to the magic of the moment for me.

Orange Paintbrush (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
Discovering the Orange Paintbrush wildflowers were one of the highlights of my summer trip to Colorado. I’d seen a scattered few Indian Paintbrush plants here in the east – but when I went west I saw them on much larger scale. Not only did I see Orange Paintbrushes, but also some pink and yellow ones. The Orange Paintbrushes grow much taller than the ones I’d seen previously, and in much larger groupings. One of the things I loved about seeing them was how often I would see hummingbirds hovering around the paintbrushes – and then buzzing in for a quick dip in the nectar. They were so much fun to watch – and once I knew to look for the hummingbirds I saw them regularly visiting the various Orange Paintbrushes. I photographed this set of Orange Paintbrushes in the Gunnison National Forest north of Crested Butte Colorado.

Yellow Lady’s Slipper (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
A few years ago, I saw and photographed my first Pink Lady’s Slipper. Since then, I have been looking for a Yellow Lady’s Slipper to photograph. A native orchid, Lady’s Slippers are one of my favorite wildflowers (and they seem to be very popular with others as well). I’ve done a fair amount of hiking in the Smoky Mountains and along the Blue Ridge Parkway when the Yellow Lady’s Slippers should be in bloom – but I still haven’t found one in the wild. This one was photographed in a private garden in the Gatlinburg area. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph in the garden of a wonderful woman who saw my work and a show and invited me over to her house to photograph. I hope you enjoy my Yellow Lady’s Slipper photograph as much as I do.

Colorado Blue Columbine (c) 2010 Patty Hankins
One of my goals on my trip to Colorado this summer was to photograph the Colorado Blue Columbine, the Colorado State Flower. I photographed the Colorado Blue Columbine in several places – each time thinking WOW! These are wonderful. I’m not going to find any better than these. And then I got to Yankee Boy Basin in the San Juan Mountains. I was a little further south and at a higher altitude than I had been at previously. The Columbine at Yankee Boy Basin were the most the beautiful I saw during my entire trip. I really like the way this set of five blossoms clustered together – a beautiful composition created by Mother Nature for me to photograph. I hope you enjoy this Colorado Blue Columbine photograph as much as I do.

American Dogwood
Dogwoods are one of my favorite spring flowers. This past spring, I photographed several different types of dogwoods in hopes of finally having a photograph of white dogwood blossoms to share with you. With this pair of blossoms, I was able to take the photograph I’ve been wanting to create – the simple white blossoms, the green and yellow centers against a dark background of the woods. I hope you enjoy this photograph of the dogwood blossoms as much as I do.
