Crested Dwarf Iris and Star Chickweed – August 2010 Photo of the Month

Crested Dwarf Iris & Star Chickweed

Crested Dwarf Iris & Star Chickweed

Crested Dwarf Irises are one of my favorite spring wildflowers. I just love the wonderful splash of purple they bring to the forest in the spring. I’ve photographed Crested Dwarf Irises in several locations in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

I took my favorite photograph of the Crested Dwarf Irises in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in April of 2009. I was photographing in the Greenbrier section of the park – when I spotted a large group of the Crested Dwarf Irises around the base of a tree. Nestled among the irises were a few Star Chickweed flowers. I thought the little white flowers added a wonderful contrast to the deep purple and greens of the irises. I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I do.

Turk’s Cap Lily – July 2010 Photo of the Month

Last summer I spent a week photographing wildflowers along the Blue Ridge Parkway and at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was my first opportunity to photograph the summer-blooming mountain wildflowers. I knew that one of the flowers I really wanted to get a great photograph of was the Turk’s Cap Lily.

So during my trip I took several hundred photos of Turk’s Cap Lilies. This one is my favorite. I love the way the flower stands out against the dark background of the trees behind it. I really wanted to show off the green star in the center of the Turk’s Cap Lily. I photographed this wildflower on the trail to the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower on the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Asheville, North Carolina.

Yellow Trillium & Purple Phacelia – May 2010 Photo of the Month

Yellow Trillium & Purple Phacelia

Each spring, the hillsides and woods in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are filled with wildflowers in every color, size and shape. Every now and then, you find a combination of wildflowers that just has to be seen to be believed. That’s what I found last year along River Road in the park – a spectacular combination of yellow trillium (trillium luteum) and purple phacelia (phacelia bipinnatifida). Not only are yellow and purple soothing complementary colors, but the way the yellow trillium was growing draws you into the picture.

I literally set my tripod up along the side of the road to capture this scene. As I was photographing it, several people slowed down to take a look. A couple of people commented on the lovely combination of wildflowers I was photographing. Two people did ask the inevitable question when ever they see someone photographing in the park – “Is there a bear?” Umm – no. Given how short of a lens I was using and how close I was to my subject – if I had been photographing a bear at that particular moment – I could easily have been his next meal!

Rubens Orchid – March 2010 Photo of the Month

Rubens Orchid (c) 2009 Patty Hankins

In the past few years, I’ve photographed many varieties of orchids. I love seeing all the different shapes and colors they come in and learning about their history and the different environments in which they grow.

One of my favorite orchid photos is one I took of some Rubens orchids. I love the bright magenta of the blossoms against the green leaves.

Native to Thailand, Malaysia and the Phillipines, Rubens orchids are a variety of Calanthe genus. Calanthe orchids are a showy hardy orchid known for their evergreen flowers and spikes of bright showy flowers.

Orchids are the flower traditionally associated with a couple’s fourteenth wedding anniversary, symbolizing pure affection, understanding and mature charm. If you are looking to send a special message to someone in the language of flowers – send orchids to convey magnificence, love, beauty and refinement.

Opening Night Rose – February 2010 Photo of the Month

Opening Night Rose (c) 2010 Patty Hankins

What could be more perfect for my February 2010 Photo of the Month than a single red rose? Since ancient times, roses have symbolized love and passion. The Greeks and Romans associated roses with Athena and Venus – their goddesses of love. Early Christians linked the five petals of early roses to the wounds of Christ, with the red rose eventually coming to symbolize the blood of martyrs. In more recent times, red roses have been used as a symbol of socialism or social democracy.

For many people, a red rose is the symbol of love associated with Valentine’s Day.

I photographed this wonderful Opening Night Rose at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland last summer. As the February 2010 Photo of the Month, it is available at a special price of 20% off the regular price.
