Photos From the Road: Food & Still Life Photography Workshop with Karen Burns & Marie Otero

In mid-October, I headed to Connecticut for a Food & Still Life Photography Workshop with Karen Burns & Marie Otero. I had taken a similar workshop with them last spring and absolutely loved it, so when a fall workshop on the east coast was announced, I knew I had to go. I thought I’d share some of the photos I took at the workshop with you today.

First a few photos of the food. This is one of the workshops where “First we shoot, then we eat” And let me tell you, all the food was DELICIOUS!!!!

In addition to helping us learn how to photograph food and still lifes, Karen and Marie worked with us on editing our photos in Lightroom and Photoshop. One of the techniques they shared was how to convert a photograph into an image with the look of a watercolor sketch. I tried it on my Butterfly Collector and I kind of like it.

I really enjoyed the workshop and am really glad I attended it for a second time. Not only did I get to meet and work with some wonderful photographers, I also got a chance to learn some new skills and build on what I learned at the workshop in the spring.

I’d love to know what you think of the photos I took at the workshop. Is there one you particularly like? Let me know in the comments below.

Over the past few months, I’ve added twelve new photographs to my website. I wanted to share them with you today so you can see where my photographic adventures and explorations have taken me.

As you’ll see I’ve been exploring still life photographing in my studio since taking a still life photography workshop last spring. But don’t worry, I’m still photographing flowers – in fact – I’ll have two solo shows next year featuring my flower photos – so you’ll be seeing lots of new flower photographs in the months to come.

I’ve recently added a new photo Musical Memories to my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/musical-memories/

As I created this still life, I pictured what the dressing table of a late nineteenth-century young woman looked like after her piano recital. Her sheet music (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata), her evening gloves, her watch, her jewelry, her fan and a teacup just waiting to be filled with a relaxing cup of tea. And of course, there is a delicate flower from one of her admirers.

This photograph is available matted to 11X14 for $ 54 or to 16 X 20 for $ 109

Inspired by Local Flowers

Inspired by Local Flowers

As you may recall, I attended a Still Life and Food Photography workshop with Karen Burns and Marie Otero last spring. You can see some of my photos from the workshop at http://www.beautifulflowerpictures.com/blog/first-we-photograph-then-we-eat/

Since then, I’ve been exploring still life photography in my studio. I thought I’d share some of photos with you today. I’m still figuring out what feeling I’m going for with many of my still lifes. This summer, I’ve been using flowers from local flower farms as starting points for many of my images.

Kitty Dusty has been known to join me in the studio. Here she is with flowers from Wollam Gardens in her roles as the Supervisor and The Assistant (when I don’t have things arranged to her satisfaction).

I hope you’ve enjoyed a peek at some of the still lifes I’ve been creating in my studio. I’m looking forward to learning more about creating still lifes next month when I’ll be attending still life photography workshops at Penumbra Foundation in New York City and in Connecticut with Karen Burns and Marie Otero.

Afternoon Tea with Strawberries – New Photo

Afternoon Tea with Strawberries © 2018 Patty HankinsI’ve recently added a new photo – Afternoon Tea with Strawberries – to my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/afternoontea/

I’ve started exploring still life. There is something wonderful about not only creating a scene but also photographing it. I bought the peony in the photo at my local farmers market. When I combined that with the strawberries, for some reason I started imaging an afternoon tea. So I pulled out my tea service and set up an afternoon tea with strawberries.

This photo is available matted to 11 X 14 and 16 X 20.
