Have you ever wanted to learn about studio lighting in a fun relaxing atmosphere?
Join Bill and me for an introductory workshop on photographing flowers under studio lights. We’ll be working with both continuous lighting and studio flash units – not only will we explain how we light a still life subject, but you’ll also get a chance to photograph using both types of lights.
We’ll have both sets of lights set up and several sets of flowers for everyone to photograph.
You can see some of my photos of flowers photographed in my studio at http://beautifulflowerpictures.com/flowers-in-the-studio/
Workshop will be on Saturday September 10 from 1 – 5 PM at our house in Bethesda. Limited to 4 people.

Have you ever stood breathless in front of a flower that you wanted to remember forever? Took a picture? And were disappointed with the results?
So you go through this series of steps: point, focus and click. Check the photo on the back of the camera.
No, that’s not what it looks like. Repeat. Point, Focus, Click. Check it again on the back of the camera.
Damm It! Still not right.
You’re tempted to think it’s your camera and you need to buy newer and better (aka “more expensive”) gear.
Stop! Don’t buy any more gear!
I want to help you keep your money in your pocket and create the beautiful photographs you’ll be proud to share.
I would love to have you join me for a weekend of photographing flowers this July. Not only will we spend time photographing in local gardens, and we’ll also explore how to create the photographs that let you share the beauty you are seeing in nature.
This workshop is for you if you . .
- Love photographing flowers
- Enjoy spending time in nature
- Enjoy hanging out with other nature photographers
- Seek personal guidance as you improve your flower photography skills
- Have the vision but can’t get your gear to cooperate
At the workshop you will . . .
- Have a great time photographing at gardens and parks in the Washington DC area
- Compose photographs that allow you to share what caught your eye in the field
- Capture the beauty you see in your photographs
During the workshop, we’ll visit at least two local gardens or parks to photograph flowers. We will head to the gardens that have the best displays that weekend. We will gather at my home in Bethesda for discussions of the art and craft of flower photography.
The workshop is limited to 6 participants to ensure that I’m able to give you the personalized attention you should get in a photography workshop.

Are you curious about Lightroom? Have you heard it’s a great program for editing your photos? Is it on your computer and you have no clue how to use it? Or how to edit your photos?
Adobe Lightroom was developed by photographers for photographers to make organizing and editing our photos easier. It has very powerful features – even after only a weekend you will be able to make your photos look amazing. By editing your photos you can share your vision of what you photographed – not just what your camera captured.
On June 4-5, I’ll be teaching a workshop to help you get started using Lightroom. I won’t be covering every feature—if I did—we’d all be in total overwhelm and would be in my dining room for days . . .
We’ll focus on the features you need to know. By the end of the workshop you’ll know how to:
Organize and manage your images by
- Importing your photos into Lightroom
- Adding your copyright information to all your photos
- Organizing your photos so you can find them
- Adding keywords to your photos so you can search for them
And edit your images by
- Cropping to find the photo in the photo
- Adjusting brightness and contrast to make your images pop
- Adjusting colors to make your photos look like you want them to look
- Doing global and local edits to show what you saw when you took the photo
- Exporting your photos from Lightroom for the web
- Printing your photos from Lightroom
To participate in the workshop, you’ll need
- A laptop computer
- Lightroom 6 or CC (Trial version is fine which can be downloaded for free from Adobe) installed on your computer
- A willingness to learn
Join me on June 4-5
Registration Fee $ 297
Early Bird Registration – Register before May 1 and save $ 50 – Fee $ 247
The workshop will be held at my home in Bethesda, Maryland. I’m limiting the workshop to 6 participants to make sure I can provide you with any individualized help you need.
Not sure if this workshop is right for you? Email me and we’ll find a time to talk.
Tentative Schedule
Saturday June 4 9 AM – 5 PM
- Introduction to Lightroom
- Importing your photos into Lightroom
- Organizing your photos in Lightroom
- Editing your photos in Lightroom Part 1 (Global edits)
Sunday June 5 9 AM – 5 PM
- Editing your photos in Lightroom Part 2 (Local edits)
- Preparing your photos for the web
- Preparing your photos for print
This workshop is designed for people who are ready to start editing their photos – or are ready to use a program with more options than Picasa or PicMonkey. You may already have a copy of Lightroom on your computer but don’t have any idea what to do with it.
Not sure if this workshop is right for you? Email me and we’ll find a time to talk.
A few more details:
Meals are not included in the cost of the workshop. We’ll break for lunch and there are a number of restaurants in the area or you are welcome to bring your lunch with you and eat here at the house.
The workshop will be held at my home in Bethesda. I do have several cats – so if you are allergic to cats, please plan on taking your allergy medications in advance. We’ve never found a way to get all the cat hair and cat dander off the furniture and I’m sure my cats will come by to greet everyone..

I’m back from a quick 4 day trip to Georgia and South Carolina. I had originally planned a slightly longer trip – but Snowzilla and 28″ of snow in Bethesda caused to me to adjust my plans a bit.

My main purpose for the trip was to finalize the details for the Springtime in the South: Savannah, Charleston and South Carolina Low Country photo tour in March. Not only did I indentify which hotels we’ll be staying at (and which we won’t!) but I also managed to get in a little photography around the raindrops and found a couple of additional places we’ll be visiting in late March.
Finally on my third trip to South Carolina in the past year, I finally managed to photograph a sunrise at Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area near Edisto. The beach is known for its boneyard of dead trees near the shore.

I found some amazing Spanish Moss covered Live Oak Trees at Ernest F. Hollings – ACE Basic National Wildlife Refuge in Hollywood, South Carolina.

On my September trip I photographed some wonderful ruins at Sheldon Church in Yemassee. Last week I found another set of church ruins – this time at the Pon Pon Chapel of Ease in Adams Run.

I discovered a wonderful craft gallery in Walterboro – the South Carolina Artisans Center – with works from over 250 juried artists from South Carolina.

And finally in Savannah I spent a little time walking around the historic district photographing some of the wonderful store signs and displays.

I’m really looking forward to leading my Springtime in the South Photo Tour from March 20 – 26. We’re going to have a great time photographing in Savannah, Charleston and lots of places in between. There are still a few spaces left on my photo tour – I’d love to have you join me in March. You can see all the details about my Springtime in the South Photo Tour on my website.
