In the Studio: Purple and White Dahlia

Continuing my adventures in photographing flowers under the studio lights . . . after photographing the gerbera daisies, I started working with a lovely purple and white dahlia I bought at the farmer’s market from my favorite flower farm Wollam Gardens.

For some the photos I used a hand-held reflector in addition to the main light with the softbox to direct a little more light to side of the flower away from the light.

The other thing I did was start using my Canon 90mm Tilt-Shift lens. I’ve had this lens for a while – but never really could see where it made a difference for me when I’m photographing flowers. Tilt-shift lenses can be used to increase the depth of field in a photo by changing the plane of focus of the lens.

With the dahlia in studio – I finally got how it works – and I’ve been having a blast with it ever since.
