Spider Mums are one of my favorite types of chrysanthemums. They are known for their long tubular petals with hooked ends. Spider mums, like most other chrysanthemums, tend to bloom in the fall and they can be found in a variety of colors and shapes.
I photographed this purple and white spider mum in the fall of 2012. When I saw it, the combination of the colors really caught my eye – the dark purple at the ends of petals, the lighter purples on the petals closer to the center and the several shades of pale yellow and white in the center. It is one of most striking chrysanthemums I’ve seen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

One of my favorite flowers to photograph in the fall is chrysanthemums. I’m always amazed at all the colors and varieties I see at local botanical gardens. Of the thirteen types of chrysanthemums – the spider mums are my favorite. They all have such wonderful structures and textures in the blossoms.
Here are some of my the spider mums I photographed this year.
Chrysanthemums are my favorite fall flower. For years, the only ones I saw were the ones available at the grocery store in the usual fall colors of yellow, orange and perhaps a dark red – and I didn’t really think chrysanthemums were that spectacular. Then I started seeing different varieties and types of chrysanthemums and fell in love with them.
With thirteen different categories of chrysanthemums available in almost every color of the rainbow, chrysanthemums can be a photographer’s dream to photograph. The colors, textures and shapes are incredible. I’ve created a new video for you – Beautiful Chrysanthemums – with some of my favorite chrysanthemum photos.

In past few years, I’ve really come to appreciate all the wonderful varieties of chrysanthemums that are available. One of my favorites is the Mancetta Sunset Chrysanthemum – an anemone mum – with its petals in shades of peaches and oranges – with a bright yellow center.
