I spent a wonderful day photographing at Longwood Gardens earlier this month. I’d gone up to Kennett Square in search of tulips. I was a little late for peak tulip bloom but I did find lots of flowers to photograph – including a few tulips. I thought I’d share some of the photos with you today – and the rest later in the week
One of my favorite flowers to photograph in the spring are columbine (Aquilegia a member of the Rannuculus family). I love seeing the native columbine Aquilegia canadensis in the woods and along the roadsides. Several of the gardens in the DC area have wonderful displays of some of the cultivated varieties of columbine that bloom every year. Here are a few photos of columbine that I’ve photographed at local gardens.

I was looking through my notes and realized I’ve edited but never shared several sets of wildflowers from my various trips. So I thought I’d start catching up with my photos of Yellow Columbine – aquilegia flavescens – taken at Glacier National Park. A member of the Buttercup (Ranunculaceae) family, Yellow Columbine is native to the western US states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregan, Utah, Washington and Alaska. It is also native to the western provinces of Canada. This beautiful summer blooming flower has soft cream to yellow flowers on a plant that grows to 3 feet tall. It prefers to grow in mountain meadows and alpine slopes. The ones I photographed at Glacier National Park were a lovely shade of yellow.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Pink & Purple Columbine – to my Beautifulflowerpictures.com website.
Each year in early May, Columbine blooms at the local botanical gardens in a rainbow of colors. I spotted this set of columbine in shades of pinks and purples after a morning rain – and knew I had to photograph it. I really liked seeing the water droplet on the end of the columbine bud.
This photograph is available as a 12 X 18″ or 20 X 30″ gallery-wrapped canvas. You can order Pink & Purple Columbine from my website.
