Star Campanella Rose © 2016 Patty Hankins
I’ve recently added a new photo – Star Campanella Rose – to the shop on my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.
What can I say – other than WOW!!!!! When I saw the Star Campanella Roses at my local floral wholesaler I knew I had to get them and photograph them. The soft layers of yellow petals seem to go on forever. The more I looked at the details of this beautiful flower, the more patterns and textures I saw to photograph. For this photo, I chose to show the beautiful complex center and the delicate edge petals of the rose
Star Campanella Rose is available as a matted print on my website.

Last month I bought what I thought was a lovely set of Jalah roses to photograph in my studio. Problem was – they weren’t in as good of shape as I thought they were – and the damage to the petals (especially along the edges) really shows in the photos.
Once I realized the flowers weren’t in the shape I needed them to be in to create the photos I wanted – I should have stopped shooting and done something else. Instead I tried all sorts of things to get better captures – including taking sets of images that I could stack in Helicon Focus to create images with greater depth of field.
What I ended up with – was a bunch of photos I’m not particularly happy with – after spending a few hours in the studio with them – and way too much time in Helicon Focus and Lightroom. I’m sharing them as much for a reminder to myself that it’s better to walk away from images that aren’t working – than to spend a lot of time creating not so great images – as anything else.
So here are the best of a not great photo set . . .

On my last morning in Washington I spent a few hours at the Manito Park Gardens in Spokane (by now – you know if I’m travelling somewhere I’m going to look for a botanical garden to photograph!). One of the highlights of the gardens was the rose garden. Not only was it full of beautiful roses – but most of them were varieties I wasn’t familiar with. I don’t know if that’s because some roses do better on the west coast than the east coast, or just that the gardens around here tend to plant similar roses. In any case, photographing these roses was a wonderful way to end a fantastic photography trip to Washington.
