In the Studio: Rise n Sun Roses

Bill and I were recently working with one of our favorite models Blue River Dream in the studio. We were trying to capture the lighting and style of paintings similar to Titian’s “Venice of Urbino” and Ingres’ “La Grand Odalisque.” And since many paintings in this genre feature flowers on an end table – we got some Rise N Sun Roses to include in the scene. Here’s one of my photos from that studio session.

Once we done working the roses and the model, I took the flowers into my studio. I ended up photographing several different compositions that afternoon.

I started with a grouping of three blossoms.

Next up were photos of single blossoms.

While I liked the photos I’d taken – they weren’t quite what I was looking for. I decided to add more roses to the arrangement and fill the frame with flowers. One flower happened to be taller than the others – so I decided to try to make it stand out more from the other flowers.

My first two filling the frame compositions weren’t quite what I was looking for.

Finally – I got what I was looking for – I moved the taller flower a little higher up in the vase to separate it from the others – and moved in a little closer with my lens. I hope you enjoy what I think is the best photo of the set of Rise n Sun Roses.

Roses on a Winter Day

Roses on a Winter Day

As I’m writing this post – it’s freezing cold here in Bethesda -and there’s still some snow on the ground. And all I can think about is being back outside in a garden photographing flowers on a warm sunny day.

So I thought I’d share a photos of Roses to remind us all (including me) that warmer days are coming.

Shades of Pink Roses

Shades of Pink Roses

Summer and Roses just seem to go together. I love visiting the local botanical gardens and photographing their roses. Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland has beautiful roses blooming from June through September.

I notice that I’ve photographed a number of roses in various shades of pink – so thought I’d share them with you.

Strike it Rich and Tahitian Sunset Roses

Strike it Rich and Tahitian Sunset Roses

I’ve noticed that when I’m photographing roses at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland, I’m often drawn to the same varieties of roses every time I visit. Two of my favorite roses to photograph are the Strike it Rich Roses and the Tahitian Sunset Roses.

Strike it Rich Roses are a grandiflora rose known for it’s yellow/orange flowers – that sometimes have a bit of red around the edges. The blossoms on the wonderful roses are often five inches in diameter  on bushy plants that grow to about thirty inches tall.

The Tahitian Sunset Roses are a hybrid tea rose known for it’s large blossoms in shades of yellow, orange, peach and apricot. The flowers start blooming in shades of yellow and orange – shifting to peach and apricot as the fully open.
