Water lilies can be such delicate summer blooming flowers. I love seeing all the colors of water lilies are some of the local gardens. Not only do the petals come in all sorts of wonderful shades but the centers are often a complimentary color – like the pale purple and yellow combined in this wonderful Bob Trickett Water Lily. When I saw this lovely water lily, I knew I had to photograph it. I zoomed in to capture just the center with part of the petals rather than photographing the whole flower surrounded by water, which I’ve done with several other water lilies I’ve photographed. I hope you enjoy this different view of a water lily as much as I do.
As summer is winding down here in the DC area, I thought I’d share some of the water lily photos I took this summer. Several of the local gardens have displays of water lilies – so every year – I end up taking photos of many wonderful water lilies. Here are some of my favorite water lily photos from 2015
I usually photograph water lilies several times a year at gardens in the DC area. And when I do – I usually compose my photos with one of the water lily blossoms as the main subject of the photo. One day while photographing the flowers I happened to notice the wonderful patterns and textures in the leaves of the water liles and started photographing them. The more I looked at the leaves, the more fascinated I was by the combination of colors – bright green in the center surrounded by yellow green with dark brown patches on the leaves edged with a red brown trim. How could I not photograph them? and then share this wonderfully different view of water lilies with you.
Water Lily Leaves is available as a matted print on my website. It available in two sizes – matted to 11X14 inches or matted to 16X20 inches.
A sure sign of summer in the DC area is the water lilies start blooming at the local gardens. We’re lucky in the DC area – there are several botanical gardens and parks that feature water lily displays all summer long. They usually start blooming in mid-June and last through mid-September.
I used to think that water lilies were white flowers with yellow centers, not very big and certainly nothing to go out of my way to see. Boy was I wrong – I’ve fallen in love with all the different colors of water lilies I’ve been seeing – wonderful shades of pink, purple, yellow and blue. I’ve created a new video Beautiful Water Lilies with some of my favorite water lily photos. They are accompanied by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Prelude in C Allegro.
I do have a number of water lily photographs available for sale in the water lily gallery on my website, including two introduced in the past few months.
Water lilies can be such delicate summer blooming flowers. I love seeing all the colors of water lilies are some of the local gardens. Not only do the petals come in all sorts of wonderful shades but the centers are often a complimentary color – like the pale purple and yellow combined in this wonderful Marmorata Water Lily.
When I photographed and edited the Marmorata Water Lily photo, I kept thinking about two other water lily photos I have – June Allison Water Lily and Panama Pacific Water Lily. The three photos are matted to the same size if you want to have an arrangement of three water lilies on display in your home. I’m always on the looking for other water lily photos that would complement these three – and when I find them, I’ll be sure to let you know.
