Yellow Trillium & Purple Phacelia

Yellow Trillium & Purple Phacelia (c) 2009 Patty Hankins

Each spring, the hillsides and woods in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are filled with wildflowers in every color, size and shape. Every now and then, you find a combination of wildflowers that just has to be seen to be believed. That’s what I found last year along River Road in the park – a spectacular combination of yellow trillium (trillium luteum) and purple phacelia (phacelia bipinnatifida). Not only are yellow and purple soothing complementary colors, but the way the yellow trillium was growing draws you into the picture.

I literally set my tripod up along the side of the road to capture this scene. As I was photographing it, several people slowed down to take a look. A couple of people commented on the lovely combination of wildflowers I was photographing. Two people did ask the inevitable question when ever they see someone photographing in the park – “Is there a bear?” Umm – no. Given how short of a lens I was using and how close I was to my subject – if I had been photographing a bear at that particular moment – I could easily have been his next meal!
